  • Finders Keepers

We all know that county fairs are all about rides for thirteen year olds on a Wednesday night!  It has been confirmed by a three hour study I conducted last night when I took Ruth to the fair for the primary purpose of following her around from ride to ride.

Bringing 2 cans for the food shelf gave Ruth a $10 discount on her unlimited ride ticket, for which she was able to pay,  from her earnings after washing and waxing two of our vehicles.  (When Glori had been approached earlier by Ruth about accompanying her to the fair for rides that required two people, Glori assured Ruth that she would have no trouble finding others with whom to ride.  Glori's encouragement was prophetic!! )

Ruth seemed to be a walking magnet for other girls who wanted a partner in thrills.  First, Kathleen, a ten year old from DL adopted Ruth for over an hour while I got to know her single mother;  later thirteen year old Miriah from Waubun joined them for threesome rides.  Soon after, they were joined by thirteen year old Julia, who was with her parents from DL, which made it convenient for them to pair off for two-seaters. All were strangers to one another! WHEW!

Then Ruth and I took a two hour break to man the Pro-life booth, where we gave out rubber chastity rings to young women with "Worth the Wait" inscribed, and rubber rings to children with "Life is Precious" inscribed.

Then back to the rides, where she reunited with Miriah and school friend, Amber, who didn't like many of the rough rides, so she stood with me and visited while the other two rode another half hour.

The end result, an exhilarated/tired Ruth, and four new families for whom to pray -- three of them with thirteen year olds!!!

  • Minnesota in July

Minnesota in July is one of the few places where the air is so brisk after the sun comes up that you can see your breath; and in midafternoon of the same day, you can head out to the lake to cool off!  That's what happened today.  After Dad left for work I meandered out to the garden to take stock of our duties and laughed out loud when I SAW my breath! At about 2:30 p.m. it was warm enough for Ruth to take a dip in the lake.

I promised Stephanie I would share some pictures of our flowering perennials during the progression of the month of June, beginning with tulips of royalty and ending with irises of lavender as one faded to the other's glory  We currently have Asian orange blossoms blooming, which are not pictured.  Here goes, thanks to Dad's expertise!

  • Hello, my dears.  It's a beautiful day in July.  Joelle, Glori, and Ruth helped weed the perennial garden  --four man (girl) hours-- which leads me to a life lesson.  Before going to Texas I called two green houses in the area and bartered some of my raspberry plants for beautiful gold mulch that shone brightly in the sun.  In my rush to give grandpa's garden a makeover before I flew to TX, I neglected to prepare the garden with a cover of newspaper (an inexpensive alternative that lasts a year or two to the black fabric that lasts longer).   I simply spread the mulch to cover the dark soil  I told the girls today that quick fixes for outer beauty don't deal with the weeds underneath.  They eventually come to the surface.  We, too, can focus on our outward beauty and neglect to deal with unsettled business inside:  the need for repentance, forgiveness, and opening our hearts each day to the beauty of God's fellowship.  Love and prayers,  Mom
